The destination of a person at physical death is a temporary place until bodily resurrection unto life in eternity with God or an eternity of punishment in the Lake of Fire, which today we generally call hell.

What temporary and eternal place a person ends up in hinges on being saved by belief on Christ or rejecting the GIFT OF SALVATION (Ephesians 2:8-9) by belief on Christ alone. (John 3:14-18, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4)

We see in Luke 16 that before Christ died on the cross the temporary holding place of the dead, called Sheol or Hades, had two compartments. One side called ‘torments’ and one side called ‘Abrahams Bosom’ with an uncrossable divide between the two places.

Believers went to Abraham’s Bosom side. Unbelievers to Torments. It’s called Abrahams Bosom because the Bible says Abraham BELIEVED and was righteous by his belief. It is the side of those made righteous by belief in God and the Messiah to come.

When Christ died on the cross He went to Hades and took all the righteous dead with Him to Heaven. Abraham’s Bosom is now empty. Believers in Christ from the current age of grace under the New Covenant through Christ, which we now live in, go immediately to Heaven because Christ made the once for all sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10) for all the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2).

Believers today have been made a new creation called ‘The Spirit’ which is 100% the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Cor. 5:21). Our new Spirit resides in our current sinful bent Flesh. This new creation called the Spirit is, from the moment of belief on Christ, the NEW US, COMPLETE IN CHRIST (Colossians 2). It is Righteous, Holy and Redeemed and on physical death of our Flesh goes to be with the Lord until our bodily resurrecton at the Rapture of the church (2 Corinthians 5:8). The Spirit is without sin as nothing with sin enters Heaven…even if we sin in our flesh (Romans 7: 17, 20)

Unbelievers only have ‘The Flesh’. They go to Torments side in Hades until the Great White Throne Judgement event when they have a bodily resurrection, 1000 years after the Second Coming of Christ. They will not be found in the Lamb’s Book of Life and will be judged on their works and sins because they rejected the only pardon for sins; belief on Christ and what He accomplished on the cross.

This is my understanding from Scripture on where people go.

Where will you end up after physical death?
